One of the fastest ways to get great looking teeth is to get dental veneers. These thin covers for your teeth will cover up many imperfections and give you a great smile. If you are not happy with your teeth now and are embarrassed by them, this method can change that and give you the smile you always wanted.

About Veneers

Veneersare thin porcelain covers for the front of your teeth. Because they cover the front of the teeth, they can alter their appearance. They can be used to improve the appearance of cracked or chipped teeth, short teeth, discolored teeth, misshapen teeth, and even gaps between teeth. After they are put on, no one will know the previous problems.

When you talk to a dentist about these covers for your teeth, you will quickly discover that there are two kinds. They are either made of porcelain or of composite resin.

  • Porcelain

This type is the more natural-looking material. It is translucent and tends to reflect light more naturally, letting this cover look more like your natural teeth. They also are the more stain-resistant material. Each one is made in a lab so it means you will need to make at least two appointments with the dentist.

  • Composite Resin

The other choice is to get these covers made of composite resin. This is the same material that is used for white dental fillings. They can be made the color of your teeth but do not have quite the same natural appearance because they are not translucent.

This material is like a paste and it is applied until there is enough, and then the dentist will shape and harden it with a special light. It will then be polished and shine like your other teeth.

The Procedure

After being approved for porcelain veneers, the dentist will remove some of the enamel from your teeth. This is done because you want to have about the same thickness to your teeth after they are applied. This will make them feel more natural. Some newer products are so thin that no enamel needs to be removed. Removing the enamel is not a reversible process.

Porcelain is a highly durable material. It will resist stains better but may chip. With care, this type can be expected to last between 15 to 20 years. The composite resin version is not as durable but should last between five to seven years. Care needs to be given to avoid staining (smoking or dark liquids including coffee, tea, wine, sodas, etc.).

While many people can benefit from these covers for your teeth, not everyone can. You will need to come in for a consultation to determine if you are a good candidate. Any cavities or gum disease will need to be treated beforehand. For people with more severe problems, other solutions may be better.
