When you or your teen wants to get straight teeth, you have a choice between how to get it done. The traditional choice is with braces. This technique will work, but everyone around you will know that you are wearing them. This often makes teens embarrassed and very self-conscious. The alternative is to do it invisibly with a successful product called Invisalign.
Instead of using wires for braces, this system uses a series of clear plastic aligners – without wires. After getting a digital scan of the teeth, which is sent to a lab to make them, these aligners will be customized for the patient. The aligners are similar to teeth guards and they will progressively move teeth into the desired position. Each one is worn for about two weeks.
Because this system uses aligners made of clear plastic, it lets the color of the teeth shine through. This makes them nearly invisible unless someone gets really close. Being invisible is what makes them very attractive to teens as well as to adults who want straight teeth.
Correcting Dental Problems
Although the aligner system is not for everyone, there are several dental problems that it can correct. These problems, if not severe, can correct:
- Gaps between teeth
- Teeth that are crowded
- An overbite
- An underbite
- An open bite
- A crossbite
- Misaligned teeth.
Continue with Your Life
The Invisalign aligners are not going to get in the way of your life. Even if you play sports, you can still be active in it because there are no metal parts to break loose and cause damage. This may mean fewer emergency visits than someone with braces might have.
Wearing the Aligners
Although they are easily removable, it will be necessary to wear the aligners for about 22 hours a day. This helps ensure that the teeth are positioned correctly in a minimum amount of time. Parents can even ensure that teens are wearing them long enough each day because there is a blue compliance indicator which will reveal it. Aligners are comfortable and will not irritate the gums because each one is custom-trimmed to fit the person’s gumline.
Eat What You Want
When you wear braces, you have to be careful about what you eat. This is because some foods, particularly sticky ones, are very hard to remove from the teeth because the braces are in the way. With the aligner system, this problem does not exist. You simply take the aligners out and then eat whatever you want. There are no limitations to your food choices.
Taking care of your teeth is performed in the usual way. You simply need to brush and floss daily as before. Brushing should always be done after you eat and before you put the aligners back in.
